This is the third sculpture in a series I’ve been calling, “Animal Masks”. I’ve got the basic premise of all my ceramic sculptures – the earth and water motif. What’s different is I’m concentrating on the head of the animal and really getting into detail. I’m also considering glazing the pieces from this series in one color. Possibly just a mat white with highlights in gloss.
I’ve discovered that what’s most important to me in my sculptures is what I call the “line” work of a piece. I sometimes find colors distracting because they can focus the viewer’s eye on specific areas of the sculpture and I want the viewer’s eye to be encouraged to travel all the lines in my work.
